Pur di non scendere a compromessi, architetto geniale e nticonformista

fa l'operaio finché trova un inaspettato alleato nel direttore di un quotidiano di New York la cui moglie,
giornalista ambiziosa, è innamorata di lui. Quando un suo grande progetto subisce gravi modifiche, fa saltare in
aria gli edifici e chiede un pubblico processo per sostenere le sue idee. Epilogo trionfale. Sceneggiato da Ayn Rand,
che adattò il suo primo filosofeggiante romanzo, e ispirato alla vita dell'architetto Frank Lloyd Wright,
è il più bizzarro film nella carriera di K. Vidor e in quella di G. Cooper: una magniloquente allegoria,
più metafisica che etica, sull'individualismo, un inno all'autonomia dell'artista integro e orgoglioso che
è utile al progresso della comunità più che le forze del denaro, degli affari e della politica che
la sfruttano e l'asserviscono. Ciascuno dei personaggi principali incarna un valore o un disvalore. Sono astrazioni
così com'è astratta e disincarnata la passione che lega i due protagonisti.
